Yes, it is hard being a farmer these days. All over the world there are new rules, regulations and taxes. Farmers, especially dairy farmers, are a key driver of climate change. But they are just doing a job that has existed for thousands of years. The real problem is society and the rise of wealth that leads to a greater consumption of beef. Beef and milk should be taxed, farmers should be left alone.
But the good news is that in some countries, wilderness is returning, not out of heartfelt desire, but to combat climate change. Denmark has announced that 15% of farmland will revert to forestry. Trees are awesome but we cannot plant enough of them to fix the climate problem. But we will take any win, regardless of how misguided it may be.
In this particular case, the reason is to use less fertilizer, because fertilizer is harming marine life. Wouldn’t switching to organic make more sense?
