Pre-civilisation humans expanded into most corners, troughs and heights of the world, showing a remarkable versatility and tenacity. So when we discuss rewilding us, in theory anywhere will do.
But in does days life was typically arduous and full of suffering and cul-de-sacs where we didn’t last. The modern human mindset will never buy into suffering by choice, so any rewilding in the early stages needs to have the most appeal, while also sticking to guidelines and limitations.
The tropics are the best in terms of not getting too cold – to walk around in little or no clothing, and to get by without permanent shelter. Growing food shouldn’t be an issue. The downside is that nothing you construct lasts long, weather can be ruinous (floods, cyclones) and heat can be oppressive, and potentially worse still in the future.
So what is the right balance? Where is best? In northern Europe you can build primitive structures that last thousands of years. Yet surviving the winters is difficult.
We also have to consider the cost attributes of food, clothing and shelter. And whether we use animal products. Alternatives to wool and leather exist, but won’t keep you very warm in the snow.
One solution, and a simplistic answer on my part, is just to try everywhere, and see where works best. Starting with educated guesses of the best spots in each country, but not presuming we can determine the very best locations globally from thinking through the numerous aspects.
