Ripe for the picking.
I cannot imagine a better example of something bad for the planet that is sitting there, unguarded.
When cars arrive from overseas (in Australia that is every new car), they tend to sit in large lots waiting for distribution. I see this all the time when I drive by Port Melbourne. Because of costs, and low risks, they are outside and (I presume) unguarded. They are literally sitting ducks.
This doesn’t need to be a tech exercise. Some bold people with wire cutters and balaclavas can easily achieve the same result.
The plan (that someone could use in a fictional context…) :
- Get a non-traceable drone that can carry a small payload and deploy
- Get an agent that will damage a roof sufficiently to need it to be replaced
- Send the drone out and drop a drop of the agent on every roof
The end result may or may not make the news. It will certainly be shared amongst car importers worldwide. They will have discussions and be vigilant for weeks afterward, and then, with time, it will be forgotten about.
But for the imagined us, the proof of concept is done. The methodology can be detailed and shared widely. People can be primed to duplicate the process en masse. When that day comes, it will make the news:
- A global, coordinated attack scares businesses and authorities
- A statement from the “organization” makes it clear that capitalism and climate change are the concerns
- Insuring such car lots likely becomes impossible
- Guarding such lots becomes a cost component
Whether dictated or inspired, attacks on regular car lots would occur. Such places have bollards and chains to thwart theft, but little else.
Possibly, maybe, attacks on regular parked cars happens randomly around the world. Hopefully only targeting extravagant cars.
And when other targets happen, the entire capitalist world will be on alert, permanently, and that is terrorism.
